I have finally finished the rest of the fashion sketch layouts for my new design journal! Yay. I am really excited about this one because I am really looking forward to making a few of these designs for myself. Right now I am actually getting started on a version of the patchwork infinity scarf in the second to last sketch. Next on the list for the journal are the tech flats so I will be glued to the computer for a while trying to finish all of those, and then I will be back on the job hunt. :-)

The Story of Fade...Part 1

This past week I have been working quite diligently on putting together a new section to my portfolio. I wanted to put together something that would showcase some of my accessories as well as work on my sketching skills, which have been sadly out of practice over the last few years. I also wanted to put together a collection that was a little different from the way I was taught to design. Instead of working with an over generalized theme I decided to create a collection around a character and design more as a costume designer would, having the clothes develop as the character evolves. So I wrote a little story kind of a sci-fi fairytale, which is not really all that important to the collection other than for mood, and dispersed lines from it throughout the portfolio. Here is the first segment of the portfolio which tells the origin story of our little heroine, Fade.

As I listen to the icy sleet hit my windows outside I am thinking of the soft muted neutral shades color that winter usually brings to the landscape, soft grey blues, icy hues of snowy white. The snow (from and indoor perspective) kind of looks like a soft downy blanket over a sleeping land. This was the inspiration for this outfit.

Since I've been back from a brief winter holiday I have found myself obsessed with the sadly canceled before it's time tv show Firefly and the subsequent movie Serenity. If you have never seen it definitely check it out on hulu or netflix if you can. The best I can describe it is as wild west meets the space age, it is very action packed and has a very quirky sense of humor. Plus Nathan Fillion from the ABC series Castle is the captain and he is always fun to watch. Anyway this is what inspired me to put together a new outfit, funny thing is I found so many great items I had to make two, maybe this is the start of a new trend.

This last week I started work on a new grouping in my Etsy store for what I am calling layering bracelets. These will be thinner versions of many of the macramé friendship bracelets that I already make, but with one big upside...Their price. Early Holiday meltdown

This week as been totally unproductive :-( I was hoping when I got back from my Thanksgiving vacation I was going to get back into my routine and get my shop ready for the holidays. Especially now that I'm working again (Yay!) though only part time, I could focus on getting things done. But then the flu snuk up on me and stole 3 days of my life. I hate being sick :-( and I haven't even had the flu since high school so this one pretty much beat me into submission. Now that I'm starting to feel better, and I better because I need to go to work tomorrow, I want to play catch up and start posting new items for the winter season. Not to mention start getting Christmas gifts under control. The Weekend sale and the new hair combs are just the beginning I have so many new ideas and I can't wait to share them with you.

Work in Progress

Over the next few days while I'm out of town for Thanksgiving I'm planning on spending some time coming up with new items for my Etsy shop in time for the holidays. I want to try to come up with a few cheaper options for my friendship bracelets as well as use up some of my older supplies. Particularly scraps of fabric that are just too small to make anything with and tons and tons of embroidery floss and seed beads. Yesterday I got a jump start of this project and made 4 new bracelets, 3 old school braided friendship bracelets and one what I'm calling a scrap bracelet made with strips of fabric braided together. Some of these may end up in the store but others might not. But I do have some ideas on what to do with them either way, so stay tuned for that.

For some reason, I don't know why but I seem to have Star Wars on the brain today. Maybe it's cause I'm struggling to listen to the audio book of Dune and would rather be listening to Star by Star. Who knows. My new dill seedlings

I know it's almost winter time. Every day the daylight hours get shorter and shorter, all the leaves are falling from the trees, and it has been freezing cold out (seriously frost on the lawn in October!) but being as contrary as I am I decided that I needed to ignore this fact. After the recent demise of yet another basil plant (not entirely sure what killed it) I wanted to start a new indoor garden entirely from scratch. Last summer I had a great little indoor garden in my apartment, but thanks to a infested mint plant given to me by my parents I lost everything to some very hard to kill pests and a tomato blight. The only things that survived were my cacti and succulents.

This time around I want to grow everything from seeds and not use soil from outside that might bring fun little pests inside, and hopefully that will do the trick. So I planted a couple of seeds back in October and they are growing like weeds already. It's really rather nice to see little seedlings at this time of year.

it was so pretty. I home I can grow a new one even better.

First Friday

Here in Philly the first Friday of every month is a big deal for the artist community. On that one day a month all of the art galleries, especially those in Old City stay open late welcoming the public in often with wine, beer and snacks. Also many artists, artisans, and musicians line the sidewalks of 2nd Street hoping to sell some of their work or just to network. It is all a very old world night market feeling, really cool.

I've been going for years, and I really missed it when i lived in New York. But this is the first time I went to sell my work. I biked over with some fabric to lay on the ground and a few pieces of my jewelry and hair accessories and set up shop between an artist selling prints and a writer selling small booklets of his short stories. Aside from the cold weather (really, when I got back home it took me about 2 hours to thaw out) It was a really cool time. A lot of people stopped by to look at my items and sometimes just to talk and I quickly realized I should have brought more business cards. All in all I had a good time, more than I expected to, and I will definitely be back next month. Here is a pic of my little pop up shop below. And the next two are some pictures of how I think I will set up in the future. Now I will have to figure out how to get my little table over there on my bike.

Mountain Mama

Maybe it's the chill in the air, maybe it's the smell of the trees or maybe it's the fact that everyone in Philly is wearing flannel for some reason, but something has sparked in me the memory of spending so many falls camping in the Laurel Highlands of South Western PA. Every fall my Girl Scout troop would go up to the mountains and spend a weekend hiking, making s'mores, and generally trying to not freeze our butts off. It was a time when best friends and memories were made. This outfit is inspired by those weekend getaways and all the fun that Girl Scout sisters had together.

Little Hex Pumpkin

I finished my little pumpkin! See I said it was tiny. Still took over an hour to carve though. This year I decided to carve a simple Hex sign pattern since the pumpkin was so tiny. Growing up, my family always seemed to have an attraction to all things Pennsylvania Dutch. We had a couple of these signs hanging above doorways in our house. According to legend these signs are meant to ward off evil and welcome good fortune. This particular sign is for love and romance. This pumpkin turned out so cute I might just carve another for Thanksgiving.

Happy Halloween! As promised here are a few pics of my Steampunk outfit from Friday Night's Halloween Eve Eve Party. Quite possibly the best Halloween party I have ever been too with a Madonna, Michael Jackson , and Prince Theme which of course means Thriller was playing all night. Yay! I definitely had a great time with friends I haven't seen in a while. And I really liked this costume. I think I will add this costume to my repertoire, in the future and do more with it. I'm still surprised that I was able to pull this together without buying anything new. I think at heart I must really be steampunk. Anyway, no pumpkin yet, I am going to start on my wee (and I mean wee) pumpkin in a little bit, and I will post pictures of that right after it's finished. I've been ichin' to get carving all morning.

Halloween Costume 2010

After doing some closet spelunking to the darkest regions of my wardrobe and fearing that I might land in Narnia, I came up with a pretty cool, I think, outfit for the Halloween party I am going to tomorrow. Sometimes I think it is more fun to pull these things out of my own closet rather than buy new things. And I never buy premade costumes. But here is what I came up with. I went for a steampunk look. I found a black leather corset (don't ask it was a goth phase) a big full black gored skirt, a little poofy black crop jacket, my favorite fringe oxford boots, an old leather belt, one of my flapper hair feathers, an old handmade pearl choker, and crystal bracelet, black tights and a friend is lending me a pair of long black gloves. Not bad for a closet costume job. I will have pics of the full outfit after the weekend.

Steampunk Halloween

Usually, I go way overboard with Halloween. I spend weeks working on my costume and going all out. Basically I love playing dress up. But this year I had to throw a costume together on the fly. Literally, I only had a few days and I didn't want to spend any money. I find it really fun to try to pull a costume out of my own closet, you have to think really creatively and have no real preconceptions of what you will come up with. So inspired by what ended up coming out of my closet I decided to put together a Steampunk costume out of mostly everyday clothing and accessories you might find in your closet.

Sleep Tight

This morning I am being blissfully lazy, lounging around in my favorite sweat pants made by my old company and my warm robe, sipping coffee, and generally trying to put off going to the gym. But I was thinkiing about why I don't have many beautiful pj's to lounge around in. Everybody should have something to sleep in that makes them feel beautiful even when they aren't trying to be. Right now I am obsessed with Anthopologie's Lounge wear. Well my storage for my accessories is getting a little out of control. Previously most of my items have been stored in either Tupperware, my small draw chest or hanging on my cork board, and it is just not working. Things get lost, tangled, and generally the system just doesn't look presentable. So after seeing this article,

If you want to make your own you can buy a prestretched canvas from an art supply store. But if you want to make your own size or cover it with your own fabric here are the steps to stretching a canvas.

First you will need:

Fabric or Canvas, 4 stretchers (you can get these at many art stores), and a heavy duty stapler w/ staples (if the store has the stretchers they should carry a staple gun and the staples to go with it if not you can purchase these at most hardware stores)

First you decide on the size of stretchers you will need based on how much canvas or fabric you have. I like to leave about 3 inches extra around all sides so there is plenty to wrap around the frame. My fabric was at least 22" X 30" so I bought 2 16" & 2 24" stretchers to make up the frame of the canvas. Assemble the stretchers as shown lightly tapping the corners into place with a hammer.

making sure the beveled edges of the stretchers are all facing the fabric you begin stapling the fabric to the frame. You being on one side with one staple in the center and then stretch the canvas tight and staple the fabric in place on the opposite side as shown.

Repeat this for the other two sides

Next you can start putting more staples in to hold the fabric taunt remember to always alternate sides. Watch not to get too close to the corners, those are next.

For the corners you will make a hospital type corner tucking the fabric in on itself

Making sure that you have about a 45 degree angle when you are done.

Then staple the corner in place as shown. Repeat this for all corners.

and your done stretching the canvas! Now you can decorate it anyway you want. Either use it to display your jewelry or as a pinboard.

Autumn on P.E. Island -- I wish!

When I was little there was a TV show on the Disney Channel that I absolutely adored and every fall for some reason I have a hankering to watch it again. (this year is no exception) It was called Avonlea, and it was a based on the novels by L. M. Montgomery. The story took place a few years after Anne of Green Gables in the small town of Avonlea on P.E Island and followed the adventures and lives of the King Family. I have always loved the styling of this show and the time period it depicts so I wanted to make up an outfit inspired by my favorite characters. I hope you like it.

A weekend trip without the travel

I love Fall it's my most favorite time of year with the crisp clean air, all the colors and the smell of the leaves, it just makes me so happy. And that is one of the reasons I really like Philadelphia. Philadelphia's Fairmount Park is a great parks system that is made up of all the parks in the city and surrounding area making it one of the largest city parks in the country. Despite the fact that I live in the city I can actually get to a green country side like this without taking a car or public transportation, and completely forget that I am in a city.

This weekend I took a long bike ride out through one of the parks call Wissahickon Valley Park. The best part is that it only took me 20 mins to get there on my bike. The bulk of my 3 hour trek was on the winding trail known as Forbidden Drive which takes you all the way through the park following a little creek with no sign of the city in sight. What a great way to spend a fall afternoon.

Looks like a perfect place to stop for a bite. Next time I think I shall.

I have a soft spot for covered bridges.

Pink Hair for Hope.

I just read about this a couple of minuets ago on Free People's Blog (here is the post) and I just had to share. SO.CAP.USA is sponsoring a campaign Pink Hair for Hope to raise money to help find a cure for Breast Cancer. At participating salons you can have a pink hair extension put in for a donation of $10 and the proceeds will go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the American Cancer Society.
I think this is such a cool way to show your support to find a cure. I am trying to find a place here in Philly that is participating so I can go and get one myself. The campaign has been running since September and will continue to run until the 31st.
